Dr. Bobby John

Managing Director, Æquitas Consulting Pvt. Ltd. (India)

Dr. Bobby John is managing director of Aequitas Consulting Pvt. Ltd. He trained to be a physician at the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, but he stepped out of a career with the Indian Army to work among the rural poor in village Kedgaon of Maharashtra, India. He subsequently worked as administrator at the NM Wadia Hospital in Pune.

Bobby founded (in 2013) and currently leads Æquitas, a group of professionals who work together across disciplines to see health as an outcome of public policies and of their own work. These professionals bring deep technical, implementation, and communications expertise to support the formulation and implementation of public policies that lead to health as an outcome.

Bobby co-founded (in 2004) Global Health Advocates (Switzerland/France/India) and was executive director of Global Health Advocates India (2004–2013), a public health policy group based in Chennai/New Delhi. In this role, Bobby worked with Indian and other national governments, international agencies, and civil society organizations on issues related to governance, finance, development, and foreign policy to improve health in India and beyond.

He has served as a member on the developing country NGO board delegation of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria (2006–2010) and also served as the chair of its ethics committee. He has served as the advocacy and public affairs lead for the India office of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (2010–2011) and as the HIV/AIDS coordinator for World Vision India (2001–2002).

As an advisor and member of governing boards and technical working groups, Bobby has served George Soros’s Open Society Institute; the Population Foundation of India; MD India Pvt. Ltd; Saahasee; the Emmanuel Hospital Association; and the governments of India, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia. He currently advises two Bangalore-based biotechnology startups in the diagnostics space.
